The much-awaited Rawalpindi Ring Road is expected to open for traffic in July as work on the Rs. 47 billion infrastructure project enters its final stage. Authorities are completing the remaining development work before officially handing over the project to the Punjab government for inauguration.According to project officials, finishing touches are currently underway, including landscaping, road markings, drainage systems, fencing, street lighting, and the installation of traffic signboards. These final improvements are expected to be completed before the road is opened to the public.
Officials have confirmed that the new 38.3-kilometer highway will have a speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour. The modern expressway is designed to support smooth and fast travel while maintaining road safety standards. Authorities estimate that more than 30,000 vehicles will use the route every day. A toll collection system similar to the Lahore Ring Road will also be introduced once operations begin.
The Ring Road starts from Baanth on G.T. Road and extends to Thalian near the Motorway. It includes five major interchanges located at Baanth, Maira Mohra, Khasala, Kolian Parr, and Thalian, providing improved connectivity between Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and surrounding areas.
Officials believe the project will significantly improve traffic conditions in the twin cities. They estimate that around 25 to 30 percent of general traffic and nearly 70 percent of heavy goods transport will shift from existing roads to the new corridor. This is expected to reduce congestion, shorten travel times, and improve overall traffic flow.
The speed limit and modern road design are intended to provide safer and more efficient travel for commuters and transport vehicles. Authorities also plan to establish an industrial zone alongside the Ring Road to encourage economic development and attract new investment.
In addition, construction of the Thalian Interchange is expected to begin after the completion of the Ring Road project. Officials say the new highway, combined with the designated speed limit, will become one of Punjab’s most important transport corridors, improving connectivity and supporting regional economic growth.
