Punjab Suspends Metro, Electric, Speedo Services During 9,10 Muharram

LAHORE: The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has announced the temporary suspension of several public transport services across the province during the 9th and 10th of Muharram. The decision has been taken as part of extensive security arrangements for Ashura processions and religious gatherings.

According to PMTA officials, Metro Bus, Electric Bus, and Speedo Bus services will remain closed for two days. The suspension will affect passengers in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan, where large numbers of mourners are expected to participate in Muharram events.

Authorities said the move is intended to support law enforcement agencies in maintaining security and ensuring the smooth management of processions. During Muharram, thousands of people gather for religious processions and majalis, requiring strict traffic control and additional security measures across major cities.

Officials explained that suspending public transport services will help reduce traffic congestion near procession routes and allow emergency and security personnel to perform their duties without disruption. Temporary road closures and diversions are also expected in several areas during the two-day period.

In Lahore, one of the major mourning processions will begin from Mori Gate and travel through its traditional route. Due to the significance of the procession and the expected turnout, authorities have strengthened security arrangements and traffic management plans throughout the city.

The Punjab government has deployed police personnel and other security forces across sensitive locations to ensure peaceful observance of Muharram. Surveillance systems, checkpoints, and monitoring teams have also been activated to enhance public safety.

Residents have been advised to plan their travel in advance and use alternative transport options where available. Commuters are also encouraged to follow official traffic advisories and cooperate with law enforcement officials.

The temporary suspension of Metro Bus, Electric Bus, and Speedo Bus services is part of the province-wide efforts to maintain law and order, protect participants, and ensure that Muharram observances take place in a peaceful and secure environment.
