The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hailstorms in several regions of Pakistan from June 16 to June 20. The advisory was released by the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) as a westerly weather system is expected to impact upper and northern parts of the country during the coming days.
According to the alert, rainfall and thunderstorms are likely in various districts of Punjab, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Jhelum, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain cautious and stay updated on weather developments.
Similar weather conditions are also expected across parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Balochistan, and upper Sindh. Authorities have warned that strong winds and hailstorms could cause damage to vulnerable infrastructure, trees, and power lines in affected regions.
The NDMA further cautioned that rainfall combined with increasing temperatures may trigger flooding in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir between June 16 and June 19. Officials noted that rising temperatures could accelerate glacier melting, increasing water levels in rivers, streams, and other waterways in northern mountainous areas.
The alert highlighted the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in several vulnerable locations, including Hasanabad, Shisper, Gulkin, Gulmit, Passu, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, and Shigar. These areas are considered particularly susceptible to sudden flooding caused by the rapid release of water from glacial lakes.
Authorities have also warned that heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides could disrupt transportation and road connectivity in mountainous regions. Provincial and district administrations have been directed to remain on high alert, while tourists and travelers planning visits to northern areas have been advised to check weather forecasts and road conditions before departure and follow official safety instructions.
