Metro Bus, Electric Bus Subsidy Jumps to Rs7.3 Billion

The federal government has proposed a major increase in funding for public transport services in Rawalpindi and Islamabad under the Budget 2026-27, allocating Rs7.3 billion in subsidies for the Metro Bus and Green Electric Bus projects.

According to budget documents, the proposed allocation represents a significant rise from the Rs3 billion provided in the previous fiscal year. The increased funding is aimed at supporting the continued operation and expansion of affordable public transport services across the twin cities.

Officials said the enhanced subsidy will help improve commuting facilities for thousands of daily passengers while ensuring the smooth operation of both the Metro Bus Service and the Green Electric Bus network.

The Metro Bus Service, which has connected Rawalpindi and Islamabad since 2014, remains one of the most widely used public transport systems in the region. Under the new fiscal plan, the Green Electric Bus network is also set for further expansion.

As part of the proposed development, Green Electric Buses will be introduced in 20 additional sectors and routes across Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Currently, public transport services operate on 23 routes within Rawalpindi Division, with the new routes expected to be rolled out in phases.

The government hopes the expanded network will provide commuters with better access to reliable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective transportation while reducing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable urban mobility.
