Punjab Expands Public-Private Model to Include Government Colleges

The Punjab government has decided to expand its public-private partnership model. The new plan now includes government colleges along with schools. This move is part of wider education reforms in the province.

Officials said the policy aims to improve the quality of public education. It also focuses on better management and modern academic standards.

In the first phase, around 150 government colleges will be handed over to the private sector. This process will take place during the upcoming summer vacations. The decision is part of the public-private partnership framework already used in schools.

The government has also decided to gradually phase out commerce colleges across Punjab. Authorities believe this step will help streamline the education structure and improve overall efficiency.

As part of the new policy, the Higher Education Department Punjab has approved a major initiative called “Colleges of Eminence.” Under this program, one model college will be developed in each tehsil. These colleges will be upgraded according to international education standards.

Officials said the aim is to ensure equal quality education across all regions. They added that students in smaller areas will also benefit from improved facilities.

To select colleges for the program, the department has introduced strict performance benchmarks. Ten key criteria will be used for evaluation. These include academic reputation, faculty qualifications, student results, research output, and innovation.

Other important factors include modern infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, library facilities, and strong industry linkages. Internship opportunities for students will also play a key role in selection.

Education authorities said the reforms are designed to modernize the college system in Punjab. They added that the goal is to align public colleges with global academic standards.

Officials believe the initiative will improve teaching quality and student outcomes. It is also expected to increase competitiveness among institutions.
