GLOF Alert Issued in Gilgit After Hisper River Surge

A probable Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) event triggered emergency response measures in the Hisper–Hoper region of Gilgit-Baltistan after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) detected a sudden and significant increase in river discharge from the Hisper catchment area. The development prompted authorities to activate precautionary measures to protect vulnerable communities.

According to PMD officials, the department’s GLOF Early Warning System recorded an exponential rise in water levels, leading to the immediate issuance of alerts to the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, district administrations, and other relevant agencies. The warning enabled authorities to begin preparedness efforts before floodwaters could pose a greater threat to downstream populations.

Following the alert, local administrations launched emergency awareness campaigns and advised residents living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain vigilant. Travelers using the Karakoram Highway were also urged to exercise caution due to the potential risk of flooding, landslides, and damage to critical infrastructure in the affected region.

District administrations, local magistrates, community leaders, and volunteers quickly mobilised to warn residents in vulnerable settlements, including Hoper, Hisper, Ganish, Murtazaabad, Nasirabad, Mayun, Hussainabad, Rahimabad, Nomal, Jutal, Jaglot Colony, and Chilmish. Authorities used announcements through mosques and Imambargahs to spread warnings while monitoring teams were deployed at key bridges and river crossings.

Officials reported that floodwaters washed away approximately 200 to 250 feet of the Hisper Road, disrupting access to the valley and creating transportation difficulties for local residents. Authorities estimate that repair work may take more than a week, posing logistical challenges for affected communities and emergency response teams operating in the area.

Despite the sharp increase in water levels, no casualties or major emergencies had been reported by late evening. Authorities continue to closely monitor the flood situation as water moves downstream towards the Hunza and Gilgit river systems. Officials credited the PMD’s early warning system for helping disaster management agencies take timely preventive measures and urged residents to stay alert and follow official instructions.
