Tesla has finally announced a date for the unveiling of its long-delayed second-generation Roadster, with the electric vehicle maker expected to reveal the new sports car on October 1, 2026.
The announcement could mark a major step forward for a vehicle that has remained in development for nearly nine years. Tesla first introduced the next-generation Roadster in 2017, but repeated delays have prevented the electric sports car from entering production.
Tesla signalled the upcoming reveal through a post on X featuring the words “Go for launch” alongside a graphic displaying “10.01.”
Tesla Announces October 1 Reveal
Tesla’s announcement suggests that the company plans to showcase the next-generation Roadster on October 1.
The graphic accompanying the announcement also appears to reference the cold-gas thruster technology that Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously discussed as a potential option for the vehicle.
The proposed system has been developed in cooperation with Musk’s SpaceX and has been described as a technology that could give the Roadster unusual performance capabilities.
Musk has previously suggested that the thrusters could potentially allow the sports car to briefly lift off the ground. However, Tesla has not yet provided complete details about how such a system would be incorporated into a production vehicle.
Roadster Has Faced Years of Delays
Tesla originally unveiled the second-generation Roadster in November 2017.
At the time, the company presented the vehicle as an exceptionally high-performance electric sports car. Tesla claimed the Roadster would be capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 1.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of more than 250 mph.
Despite the ambitious specifications, the vehicle has yet to enter production.
The prolonged delay has made the Roadster one of Tesla’s most anticipated unfinished projects, with customers and enthusiasts waiting years for further developments.
Roadster Became Part of Musk-Altman Dispute
The lengthy wait for the Roadster also became part of a public exchange between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
Altman had previously reserved a Roadster and said he had been waiting for years for the vehicle.
He publicly commented that “7.5 years has felt like a long time to wait” after paying a $50,000 reservation fee.
Musk responded by saying that Altman had received a refund for the reservation.
The exchange highlighted the unusually long development period of Tesla’s next-generation sports car.
New Roadster Design Reportedly in Development
The October 1 event could also reveal a substantially different Roadster from the vehicle Tesla showed publicly in 2017.
According to a report by The Information, Tesla had abandoned the original design and was working on a new version of the sports car that had not yet been publicly revealed.
If accurate, the upcoming event could therefore provide the first detailed look at Tesla’s redesigned Roadster.
The company could also use the reveal to clarify which of the performance specifications and technologies discussed over the years will actually be included in the production model.
Production Could Still Take Time
Even with the October reveal date approaching, customers may still have to wait before the Roadster reaches production.
Musk has previously indicated that the vehicle could require another 12 to 18 months after its unveiling before production begins.
This means the October 1 event may not represent the immediate commercial launch of the sports car.
Instead, it is expected to give enthusiasts and potential buyers a clearer understanding of Tesla’s latest plans for the vehicle.
