NDMA Issues Alert for Possible Landslides in Mountainous Areas Across Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about possible Landslides in northern Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) due to ongoing rainfall and glacier melting.

According to the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), the alert will remain in effect from today until Saturday. Authorities fear that continuous rain and rising temperatures could increase the risk of road blockages, travel disruptions, and localized flooding in several mountainous regions.

The advisory highlighted multiple districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that may be affected. These include Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Haripur. Officials warned that persistent rainfall combined with accelerated glacier melt could trigger Landslides in vulnerable areas.

Several important road networks have also been identified as high-risk zones during the forecast period. These include the Lowari Tunnel route, Chitral-Dir Road, roads in Swat Valley, the Karakoram Highway, and the Naran-Kaghan Road. Any disruption on these routes could affect transportation and create difficulties for travelers.

The NDMA also warned that the danger of Landslides extends to Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Areas around Shahi, Sharda, Athmuqam, and Arang Kel may experience road connectivity issues due to unstable terrain and heavy rainfall.

Officials further noted that intense rain in upper catchment regions could cause sudden increases in water levels in local streams and nullahs. Such conditions may lead to temporary road closures and dangerous travel situations in mountainous areas.

To deal with potential emergencies, the NDMA has already issued alerts to federal, provincial, and local authorities. Relevant departments have been instructed to remain prepared and ensure timely response measures if needed.

The authority stated that NEOC is continuously monitoring weather conditions across the country. It is also tracking flood threats, Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), and landslide-related risks.

Tourists and commuters planning to visit northern regions have been advised to check weather updates and road conditions before traveling. Citizens should also follow instructions issued by local administrations and emergency services.
