The government has directed the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) to expand the Sost Dry Port into a strategic export and trade hub. The move aims to improve Pakistan’s regional trade connectivity, especially through the Gilgit-China Border route.
The directive was issued by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal during the 68th meeting of the National Logistics Board. The meeting reviewed NLC’s performance and discussed future plans for improving Pakistan’s logistics infrastructure.
NLC officials informed the board about progress in expanding regional connectivity and creating new opportunities for Pakistani exports. They highlighted efforts to develop international trade corridors and improve access to foreign markets.
The Sost Dry Port plays an important role in trade activities through the Gilgit-China Border. The government now wants to develop it into a modern logistics gateway that can support exports and strengthen economic ties with neighboring countries.
During the meeting, officials also discussed the establishment of forward transit trade centers in different countries. These include Serhetabat in Turkmenistan, Termez in Uzbekistan, and Kashgar in China. These facilities are expected to improve trade links and provide better access to international markets.
Ahsan Iqbal said the Sost Dry Port should be upgraded according to international standards. He stated that improved logistics facilities would help increase exports and support regional economic integration.
The minister also emphasized the need to establish an advanced driving academy. The academy would train skilled commercial drivers according to international requirements. He directed that trainees should also receive foreign language education to improve communication with global logistics partners, especially under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Ahsan Iqbal said logistics has become a key part of modern economies. He explained that efficient transportation systems, digital logistics, and better trade facilities help reduce costs and improve delivery times.
He added that strengthening Pakistan’s logistics sector is necessary for achieving export growth and industrial development goals. The government’s Uraan Pakistan initiative also focuses on improving connectivity and increasing economic competitiveness.
The expansion of the Sost Dry Port is expected to further enhance the importance of the Gilgit-China Border as a trade route. Better infrastructure and improved logistics services can help Pakistani businesses reach international markets more efficiently.
The planning minister also appreciated NLC’s role in improving Pakistan’s transport and logistics sector. He said the organization has contributed significantly to modernizing logistics operations across the country.
