Muslims across Pakistan are preparing to welcome Muharram 1448 AH, with astronomical forecasts suggesting that the Islamic New Year is likely to begin in the middle of June 2026.
The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council has released its scientific assessment regarding the sighting of the Muharram crescent, indicating that the first day of Muharram 1448 AH is expected to fall on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
According to the council’s Secretary General, Khalid Ejaz Mufti, the new moon is expected to be born on June 15, 2026, at 7:54 AM. However, experts believe the crescent will not be visible across Pakistan on the evening of the same day due to unfavorable astronomical conditions.
The forecast states that by sunset on June 15, the moon’s age will remain below 12 hours throughout the country. Astronomers generally consider a moon age of approximately 18 hours or more necessary for reliable crescent visibility. As a result, the young age of the moon significantly reduces the chances of sighting.
In addition to the moon’s age, the interval between sunset and moonset is also expected to be short. Experts estimate that the moon will remain above the horizon for only about 30 minutes after sunset on June 15. Despite this brief window, visibility of the crescent is considered highly unlikely.
Astronomical experts further noted that the crescent is not expected to be visible through the naked eye, binoculars, or even telescopes anywhere in Pakistan on that evening. These conditions suggest that the month of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH will likely complete its full 30 days.
Based on these calculations, the council predicts that Muharram 1448 AH will begin on June 17, marking the start of the new Islamic year. However, officials have emphasized that these projections are advisory in nature and based solely on scientific observations.
The final and officially recognized announcement regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee of Pakistan, whose decision will determine the official start of the Islamic New Year.
