ECC Approves Gemstone Policy to Boost Exports and Mining Sector

The ECC has approved a major national policy to develop Pakistan’s gemstone sector. The ECC aims to unlock untapped mineral resources across the country. The decision focuses on exports, investment, and sector modernization.

The ECC approved the “National Policy to Realize Pakistan’s Gemstone Potential 2026–2030.” The policy targets formal development of the gemstone industry. It also focuses on value addition and modern mining practices.

Officials said the ECC plan will help organize the informal mining sector. It also aims to introduce better technology in extraction and processing. These steps are expected to increase productivity.

The ECC policy places strong emphasis on regional development. Key areas include Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. These regions are known for rich mineral resources.

Authorities believe these regions hold significant economic potential. The ECC expects improved exports from gemstone-related industries. It also hopes to attract local and foreign investment.

The ECC also approved a separate restructuring plan for the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). This move is aimed at improving trade efficiency and competitiveness.

Under the plan, the ECC granted in-principle approval for the sale of 30 percent government shares in PNSC. The management control will be transferred to the National Logistics Corporation.

Officials said the restructuring will help modernize the shipping sector. It is also expected to improve operational performance and reduce inefficiencies.

The ECC noted that underutilized state assets must be developed. It stressed the need for reforms in key economic sectors. The ECC believes these changes will support long-term economic growth.

Experts say the gemstone policy could significantly boost exports if implemented effectively. They also believe better regulation will improve investor confidence.

The ECC emphasized that both the gemstone policy and PNSC restructuring are part of wider economic reforms. These reforms aim to strengthen Pakistan’s trade and resource sectors.
