Pakistani actress Amar Khan has raised concerns about gender inequality in the entertainment industry, criticizing what she described as unfair double standards between male and female actors in Pakistani dramas. Speaking during a private television show, Amar Khan said male actors are often allowed to continue playing youthful lead characters even at the age of 40 or 50, while actresses face limitations much earlier in their careers.
According to Amar Khan, audiences and producers rarely question older male actors portraying Gen Z or young-generation roles in television dramas, despite the obvious age gap. She noted that this trend has become common in the industry and is generally accepted without criticism.
However, Amar Khan said the situation for women is entirely different. She explained that actresses who once played lead characters are often shifted to secondary, mature, or motherly roles after only a few years in the industry. She described this as a clear example of gender discrimination within Pakistani showbiz.
While discussing international entertainment industries, Amar Khan pointed to Hollywood as an example where actresses continue receiving meaningful and strong lead roles regardless of age. She mentioned internationally known actresses such as Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, saying they continue to portray influential and central characters throughout different stages of their careers.
Amar Khan expressed disappointment that Pakistani dramas offer very few realistic and powerful roles for women as they grow older. She stated that talented actresses are often overlooked simply because of age, while male actors continue enjoying leading roles without facing similar pressure.
The debate surrounding age differences and casting in Pakistani dramas recently gained momentum after senior actress Atiqa Odho advised actor Fahad Mustafa to work with actresses closer to his own age. Fahad Mustafa later responded to the remarks, which sparked wider discussion across social media and the entertainment industry.
Following the controversy, Amar Khan also shared her views, adding her voice to the growing conversation about fairness, representation, and gender-based double standards in Pakistani television and showbiz culture.
