Netflix Introduces Separate Email Requirement for User Profiles

Netflix has introduced a new account requirement that could further reduce password and account sharing. The streaming platform is now asking users to link a separate email address to each eligible profile. The latest update is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to strengthen account security and improve profile management.

The change comes nearly three years after Netflix began taking stricter action against account sharing outside a single household. Since then, the company has introduced several measures aimed at ensuring that subscriptions are used according to its policies.

Earlier this month, some users started receiving on-screen notifications asking them to connect a unique email address to their profiles. The company presented the feature as a way to unlock additional benefits, including easier sign-ins and more personalized content recommendations.

Many users shared screenshots of the notifications on Reddit. Some said they received the message even though all profiles on the account belonged to members of the same household. Netflix later confirmed that the new requirement officially began rolling out on June 15.

According to the company’s help page, users can add an email address by opening the Profiles section in their account settings. Once an email is linked, the profile holder can use it to sign in, switch between available profiles, and manage settings for their own profile.

The new login feature does not apply to children’s profiles. Netflix says Kids profiles cannot be linked to separate email addresses. As a result, children cannot use those profiles to sign in directly to the streaming service.

The latest change may also affect subscribers who maintain multiple profiles for personal use instead of account sharing. Some people create separate profiles to keep viewing recommendations for different types of content. For example, a user may keep one profile for anime and another for documentaries or family content.

Under the updated system, users who want to continue managing several personal profiles may need a different email address for each eligible profile. This could make profile management less convenient for some subscribers.

Netflix says the new feature is intended to improve account access while giving users greater control over their profiles. At the same time, the requirement is expected to make unauthorized profile sharing more difficult.

Earlier this year, Netflix reported having 325 million paying customers worldwide. The latest profile update reflects the company’s continued focus on account security and personalized user experiences. As the new requirement expands, more subscribers are expected to see prompts asking them to add separate email addresses to their profiles.
