The Pakistan Meteorological Department has released its weather outlook for May 2026. The PMD forecasts above-normal rainfall in many parts of Pakistan. It also expects warmer-than-usual temperatures across the country.
According to the PMD, wet weather conditions will likely continue throughout the month. Northern regions are expected to receive the highest rainfall. These areas include Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northern Balochistan.
The PMD stated that southern regions will also receive rainfall. Sindh, southern Punjab, and parts of Balochistan may experience slightly above-normal rainfall. However, the intensity is expected to decrease toward the south.
The PMD also highlighted temperature changes across the country. Above-normal temperatures are expected nationwide. The highest increase will likely be seen in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Warmer conditions are also expected in Sindh and western Balochistan. The PMD warned that heat levels may remain high in several areas during May.
Most weather models reviewed by the PMD show a consistent trend. Northern and northwestern Pakistan have a higher chance of receiving above-normal rainfall. Central Punjab and southern regions are likely to see near-normal rainfall patterns.
Despite rainfall expectations, the PMD has warned of possible heat spikes. Plains in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan may still experience heatwave-like conditions between rain spells.
The forecast also points to both benefits and risks. Rainfall may improve water availability across the country. It will also help irrigation for seasonal crops, including vegetables and Kharif crops in Punjab and Sindh.
However, the PMD has also warned about potential hazards. These include flash floods, landslides, urban flooding, strong winds, dust storms, and hailstorms in vulnerable areas.
In northern high-altitude regions, rising temperatures may speed up snowmelt. The PMD said this could increase the risk of glacier-related incidents. Southern regions may also face higher risks of dengue and other heat-related diseases.
Farmers have been advised by the PMD to follow weather updates carefully. They should plan irrigation and harvesting based on official forecasts. Travelers and tourists are also urged to stay cautious during rainfall periods.
