The State Bank of Pakistan has announced that it will remain closed on Friday, May 1, 2026, in observance of Labour Day. The decision follows the public holiday declaration made by the Government of Pakistan.
According to an official statement issued on Tuesday, SBP confirmed that all banking operations under its jurisdiction will be suspended for the day. This includes regular services at the central bank as well as all scheduled institutional activities.
The SBP notification also applies to commercial banks, Microfinance Banks, and Development Finance Institutions across Pakistan. These financial entities will remain closed on May 1 as part of the nationwide holiday.
The closure means customers will not be able to access over-the-counter banking services during the day. Branches across the country will resume operations on the next working day.
Officials have advised individuals and businesses to complete urgent banking transactions before Friday. This will help avoid delays caused by the holiday closure.
Despite the physical branch shutdown, digital banking services are expected to continue without interruption. Customers can still use ATMs, mobile banking apps, and online transfer systems during the holiday.
The SBP emphasized that the holiday is being observed in line with the federal government’s decision to mark Labour Day as a public holiday. The day is recognized annually to honor workers and their contributions to society.
Labour Day is observed on May 1 in Pakistan and many other countries. It serves as a reminder of labor rights and the importance of fair working conditions.
The annual holiday often affects office schedules, public institutions, and financial services nationwide. As a result, advance planning is recommended for those needing in-person banking support.
With all banks and related institutions closed for the day, customers are encouraged to rely on electronic banking channels. These services will remain the most convenient option during the holiday period.
