Friedrich Merz stated on Monday that the United States is currently facing a strategic disadvantage in its conflict with Iran, adding that President Donald Trump does not appear to have a clear plan for ending the situation. Speaking to reporters, he suggested that Tehran is steadily improving its position, making it increasingly difficult for Washington to find a workable path forward.
Merz explained that shaping an effective exit strategy is becoming more complicated for the US leadership. He referenced past military engagements such as the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War, noting how prolonged involvement in those conflicts resulted in costly and challenging withdrawals. According to him, similar risks are now emerging in the current situation.
He further remarked that Iranian authorities are managing negotiations with notable effectiveness, displaying a level of strength that may have been underestimated. In contrast, he argued that the US position appears weakened, particularly due to the growing influence of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which he said has played a key role in shaping outcomes.
The German leader also emphasized the urgency of ending the conflict, pointing out that it is having wider economic consequences beyond the immediate region. He highlighted that Germany is already feeling the impact through rising energy costs and increased pressure on industrial output.
Merz added that Berlin is open to supporting international efforts aimed at protecting vital global trade routes. This could include the potential deployment of minesweeping vessels to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil supplies. However, he clarified that any such involvement would be contingent upon steps being taken toward de-escalation and the eventual conclusion of the conflict.
