US President Trump has stated that Iran cannot “blackmail” the United States over the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the Oval Office in Washington DC.
Trump said negotiations with Iran are currently moving in a positive direction. However, he warned against any attempt to use the Strait of Hormuz as political pressure.
He said Iran has previously tried to influence global markets through the key maritime route. According to Trump, such actions will not succeed against the United States.
Warning on Strategic Waterway
During his statement, Trump referred to Iran’s reported intentions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He said any attempt to block or control the route would be unacceptable.
“Iran wants to close the Strait of Hormuz again, but they cannot blackmail us,” Trump said.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Any disruption in the area can impact global energy markets.
Reference to Past Military Actions
Trump also mentioned the killing of Qasem Soleimani. He described him as responsible for attacks on US forces and casualties.
He said decisive actions had been taken against Iran’s leadership in the past. According to Trump, those decisions were necessary for national security.
The remarks came as tensions between the US and Iran continue to draw global attention.
Major Announcement Expected
The US president said a “major announcement” related to Iran will be made later in the day. However, Trump did not provide further details about the expected statement.
Officials have not clarified what the announcement will include. Markets and political observers are closely watching developments.
Remarks on Europe and NATO
In the same briefing, Trump also criticised Spain. He said the country’s economy had weakened over time.
He added that Spain had not met NATO defence spending targets. According to Trump, Spain has not committed 5% of its GDP to defence.
He also said the United States does not need permission for its operations.
Domestic Policy Claims
On domestic issues, Trump said healthcare reforms have led to major reductions in drug prices. He claimed prices have dropped by 50 to 80 percent.
He also stated that drug smuggling into the United States has decreased. Officials have not yet provided independent verification of these claims.
