Power Minister Explains How Load Shedding Is Calculated in Pakistan

The power minister has finally explained how load shedding is being calculated in Pakistan. The explanation came during a briefing on the country’s ongoing electricity crisis. He clarified the system used to estimate daily power cuts.

According to the power minister, every 500 to 600 megawatts of electricity shortfall results in around one hour of load shedding. Based on the current deficit, the country is facing nearly 6 to 7 hours of power cuts each day.

He said the power situation has worsened due to a growing gap between electricity demand and supply. Fuel shortages and reduced generation capacity are major contributing factors. These issues are placing pressure on the national grid.

The power minister further explained that LNG-based power plants are underperforming. These plants have a total capacity of around 6,000 megawatts. However, they are currently producing only about 500 megawatts due to fuel supply disruptions.

He added that the reduction in LNG supply is linked to regional conditions. This has significantly reduced available electricity in the system. As a result, the energy shortfall has increased.

Hydropower generation has also declined compared to last year. This has added further strain on electricity production. The government has tried to cover the gap using furnace oil-based plants.

Despite these efforts, the overall shortfall remains around 3,400 megawatts. The power minister said this imbalance is the main reason behind extended load management across the country.

He emphasized that authorities are working to stabilize the system. However, external factors and fuel availability continue to affect power generation. These challenges are limiting immediate improvement in supply.

Consumers have been urged to reduce electricity usage. The power minister appealed for responsible consumption during peak hours. He said public cooperation is necessary to manage the crisis effectively.

The ongoing energy situation has led to widespread concerns across the country. Many areas continue to experience long hours of load shedding. Officials say efforts are underway to improve generation capacity and reduce the deficit.
