Veteran politician Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa has passed away at the age of 90. He died at his residence in Lahore after a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of a long political career in Pakistan.
The news was confirmed by his son, Sardar Dost Muhammad Khan Khosa, who is a former Chief Minister of Punjab. Family sources said funeral arrangements have been completed. His body will be taken to Dera Ghazi Khan for burial.
Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa belonged to Bahadur Garh in Dera Ghazi Khan. He was known as one of the most influential political figures in South Punjab. His role in regional politics remained strong for several decades.
He began his political journey in the 1960s. He first served as a member of the West Pakistan Assembly from 1962 to 1965. Over the years, he was elected multiple times to the Punjab Assembly. His victories came in several elections, showing his lasting public support.
During his career, Sardar Zulfiqar Khosa held key positions in government. He served as the Governor of Punjab for a short period in 1999. His tenure took place during the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
He also became a member of the Senate of Pakistan. He represented Punjab in the upper house from 2012 to 2018. In the 2018 general elections, he contested on a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf ticket. However, he was not successful in securing a seat.
Throughout his life, he remained associated with different political parties. These included Pakistan Muslim League-N, Islami Jamhoori Ittehad, and PTI. At times, he also served as an independent politician.
Political observers often described him as a seasoned and influential leader. His strong connection with South Punjab made him a respected figure in the region. Many leaders and supporters have expressed grief over his passing.
He is survived by his three sons, including Sardar Dost Muhammad Khosa. His family and supporters remember him for his decades of public service.
