China Plans to Hit Asteroid in Space Defense Test

China is preparing a major space mission to test a new method of protecting Earth from possible asteroid threats. The mission aims to crash a spacecraft into a near-Earth asteroid by 2030.

The experiment will study whether a high-speed spacecraft impact can change an asteroid’s orbit. Scientists hope the mission will improve future planetary defense strategies against dangerous space objects.

Researchers have selected a small asteroid called 2015 XF261 as the mission target. The asteroid is around 30 meters wide and follows an orbit around the Sun similar to Earth’s path.

The asteroid is expected to pass relatively close to Earth around 2030. Scientists believe this makes it a suitable target for testing asteroid deflection technology.

The mission will use two spacecraft launched together from Earth. After reaching space, the spacecraft will separate and perform different tasks.

One spacecraft will travel toward the asteroid and collide with it at a speed of more than 26 times the speed of sound. The second spacecraft will stay at a safe distance and observe the impact.

The observation spacecraft will collect important scientific data before and after the collision. It will continue monitoring the asteroid for several years.

The spacecraft will use advanced equipment, including cameras, spectrometers, and dust detectors. These tools will help scientists study the asteroid’s surface, structure, density, and internal layers.

The final impact process will happen automatically because signals from Earth would take too long to control the spacecraft in real time. The spacecraft will make decisions using onboard systems.

Scientists will later measure how much the collision changes the asteroid’s movement around the Sun. They will also study whether the impact affects the asteroid’s internal structure.

China’s mission is different from NASA’s 2022 Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). NASA successfully changed the orbit of a smaller asteroid moon called Dimorphos using a spacecraft impact.

However, the Chinese mission will focus on hitting a more solid asteroid and studying a direct change in its path. Researchers believe this could provide valuable information for real planetary defense situations.

Experts say asteroid impacts have caused serious damage in Earth’s history. Events such as the 1908 Tunguska explosion and the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor showed the risks posed by space objects.

Scientists believe objects of similar size could create major destruction if they strike Earth. However, tracking small asteroids remains difficult.

The asteroid 2015 XF261 has only been observed 74 times over the past decade. Accurate tracking will be an important challenge before the mission begins.
