Pakistan International Airlines has announced the end of all discounted fares for several passenger categories. The decision affects students, senior citizens, journalists, retired military personnel, and Airports Security Force officials.
According to officials, PIA has issued clear instructions to staff at all airports to implement the decision immediately. The airline has confirmed that all concessions have been withdrawn until further notice. This step is part of efforts to manage rising operational costs.
A spokesperson for PIA stated that the airline is under serious financial pressure. The main reason is the sharp increase in jet fuel prices. Officials say the airline had no option but to remove discounts across all sectors.
The new policy means that affected passengers will now have to pay full ticket fares. This change is expected to impact thousands of travelers across Pakistan. Many people who relied on discounted fares may now face higher travel costs.
Industry experts say fuel costs play a major role in airline expenses. In the case of PIA, fuel accounts for around 30 to 40 percent of total operating costs. Recent price hikes have made it difficult for the airline to maintain previous pricing policies.
Reports indicate that jet fuel prices have increased significantly. The rate rose from Rs190 to Rs472 per litre in March. This sharp rise is linked to global supply chain issues and increasing demand.
As a result, domestic ticket prices have increased by Rs10,000 to Rs15,000. International fares have also gone up by Rs30,000 to Rs40,000. These increases have made air travel less affordable for many passengers.
Officials have warned that continued high fuel prices could create further challenges. Some experts believe that PIA may struggle to sustain operations if costs continue to rise. This has raised concerns about the future of the airline.
Authorities have also expressed concerns about the impact on competitiveness. Higher ticket prices may reduce the number of travelers choosing PIA compared to other airlines.
For now, the airline has made it clear that discounts will remain suspended. Any future changes will depend on fuel price trends and overall financial conditions.
