Punjab Announces Free Public Transport and Subsidies After Petrol Price Hike

Punjab has announced a major relief package to support citizens facing rising fuel costs. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif confirmed that Public Transport services across major cities will now be free. This decision aims to reduce travel expenses for daily commuters.

The free Public Transport initiative includes key services such as the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electro Bus. These transport systems are widely used in urban areas. The move is expected to benefit thousands of passengers every day.

Officials said the decision is part of a broader national austerity plan. This plan has been introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The government aims to provide relief during a time of high global fuel prices and economic pressure.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz described the package as a historic step. She said it reflects the government’s commitment to supporting citizens during difficult times. The rising cost of petrol has made daily travel expensive, especially for low-income groups.

Along with free Public Transport, the government has announced additional financial support. Farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs100 per litre per acre. This is expected to reduce agricultural costs and support food production.

Motorcycle owners will also benefit from the relief measures. Registered riders will receive Rs100 for every 20 litres of fuel purchased. This step aims to help individuals who rely on motorbikes for daily travel and work.

The Chief Minister praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for managing fuel supply and prices during global challenges. She said billions of rupees have already been spent to support the public. These efforts are part of a larger strategy to ease economic pressure.

Maryam Nawaz also encouraged citizens to use Public Transport instead of private vehicles. She highlighted that Pakistan depends heavily on imported oil. Reducing fuel consumption can help manage national expenses and improve sustainability.

Experts believe that free transport services could reduce traffic congestion and fuel demand. It may also provide immediate financial relief to households. However, long-term success will depend on continued support and proper implementation.
