NDMA Warns of Flash Floods and Hazards in Gilgit-Baltistan

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning about potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), flash floods, and landslides in northern Pakistan from April 1 to April 10, 2026. Vulnerable areas in Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are expected to face increased risks due to a widespread weather system forecasted during this period.

The NDMA said areas near glacier termini are especially at risk. Heavy rainfall combined with glacial melting could trigger floods, mudslides, and landslides. Above-average temperatures in recent days have accelerated glacial melt, increasing the potential hazards.

Authorities have been instructed to monitor vulnerable sites closely. The NDMA has urged federal ministries, provincial governments, district administrations, and municipal authorities to:

  • Keep early warning systems operational
  • Prepare timely evacuation plans
  • Ensure emergency response mechanisms are active

Rescue agencies, including Rescue 1122, civil defense, and fire brigades, have been asked to remain on alert with necessary personnel and equipment ready for action.

The NDMA also advised the public to exercise caution. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, and glacier zones. Tourists have been warned to refrain from trekking, approaching glaciers, or taking photographs in hazardous areas.

Recent rain and snowfall have caused unusually cold weather in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan. Heavy rain partially blocked sections of the Karakoram Highway in Kohistan and Hunza, stranding thousands of travelers before authorities restored the route. Officials have advised residents to remain vigilant and drive cautiously during the ongoing weather spell.

Experts warn that climate change is increasing risks in northern Pakistan. According to the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency, average temperatures have risen by 0.6°C since 1987, accelerating glacier melt and flash floods.
