Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has announced a significant increase in fees for new electricity connections. The decision was confirmed through an official notification issued on Monday. The new rates have been implemented with immediate effect.
According to the updated tariff, consumers applying for a new connection will now pay Rs21,300. This is a sharp rise from the previous fee of Rs6,400. The increase has raised concerns among applicants planning to install new electricity meters.
Officials explained that the revised amount includes multiple components. Out of the total fee, Rs17,700 will cover the cost of the meter and cable. An additional Rs3,660 will be charged as security. These charges are now mandatory under the new LESCO policy.
Sources within LESCO revealed that the decision was not unanimous. Some officials reportedly opposed the steep increase in fees. They raised concerns about the financial burden on consumers. Despite this, the chairman and board members approved the proposal.
The fee hike comes at a time when many citizens are already dealing with rising living costs. New applicants may now need to plan their budgets carefully before applying for connections. The increase could also impact housing projects and small businesses.
Authorities have not provided detailed reasons for the sudden increase. However, experts believe it may be linked to rising material costs and infrastructure expenses. The cost of meters, cables, and installation has increased in recent years.
Consumers are advised to check the updated rates before submitting applications. It is important to ensure all documents and payments are completed according to the new guidelines. This will help avoid delays in the connection process.
The latest move by LESCO highlights ongoing changes in the energy sector. It also reflects the challenges faced by utility companies in maintaining infrastructure. At the same time, it raises questions about affordability for the general public.
