Shehbaz Sharif has once again urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and support the government’s austerity measures. The appeal comes amid rising regional tensions and increasing global oil prices.
During a review meeting on fuel conservation, PM Shehbaz emphasized the need for collective responsibility. He said the country must manage resources carefully in the current situation. The meeting focused on steps taken to reduce fuel consumption and maintain stability.
Officials briefed PM Shehbaz that Pakistan currently has sufficient petroleum stocks. They said timely decisions helped prevent shortages. Authorities are also monitoring fuel supply and demand through a digital system.
The prime minister highlighted that public relief remains a top priority. He stated that the government has provided maximum support to citizens in recent weeks. Measures were taken to reduce the impact of rising global oil prices.
To control fuel prices, the government allocated Rs125 billion through budget adjustments. This step was taken to avoid increasing petrol and diesel prices. According to officials, this decision helped protect citizens from international market pressures.
PM Shehbaz also urged people to change daily habits. He advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and use teleconferencing where possible. These steps can help reduce fuel consumption across the country.
In addition, the prime minister directed provincial governments to improve vehicle registration systems. He said motorcycle and rickshaw owners should be able to register vehicles in their own names. This will help improve data and support future relief programs.
The meeting included senior officials and ministers. Among them were Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and other key cabinet members. The discussion also covered coordination with provincial governments and regional authorities.
Officials informed PM Shehbaz that Pakistan has not faced fuel shortages like some other countries. They credited effective planning and timely imports for this stability. Arrangements for fuel imports in April have already been finalized.
A proposal for a fuel support program was also discussed. It is expected to benefit motorcycle riders and rickshaw drivers. The government is working on a digital system to manage such initiatives.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz rejected a proposal to increase fuel prices. The summary suggested a major hike in petrol and diesel rates. However, the prime minister decided the government would absorb the additional cost.
He stated that petrol should have been priced much higher based on global rates. Instead, it is being sold at a subsidized price to support the public. A similar approach is being followed for diesel.
