Sindh Government Plans Province-Wide Smart Lockdown

The Sindh government has decided to implement a smart lockdown across the province as part of efforts to manage rising fuel costs and conserve petrol amid increasing global oil prices. Officials say the smart lockdown will differ significantly from the restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, as the primary goal is not to limit public movement or social interaction, but rather to reduce unnecessary fuel consumption.

Government spokesperson Diwan Sukhdev Asardas explained that the decision comes in response to escalating international oil prices, largely driven by ongoing geopolitical tensions, including developments in Iran and other regions. These circumstances, he noted, have made it essential for authorities to take proactive steps to protect the country’s fuel reserves and ensure long-term sustainability.

Under the proposed smart lockdown, educational institutions such as schools, colleges, and universities may shift to online classes to minimize daily commuting. Similarly, the government is considering implementing work-from-home policies for both public and private sector offices to further cut down fuel usage.

In addition to these measures, authorities are planning initiatives to reduce traffic congestion on roads, which will directly contribute to lower petrol consumption. However, essential services will remain unaffected. Hospitals, law enforcement agencies, and public transport systems will continue to operate normally to ensure that daily life is not significantly disrupted.

The spokesperson emphasized that the smart lockdown is a strategic and targeted approach aimed at balancing economic activity with resource conservation. He also confirmed that an official notification outlining detailed guidelines and specifying affected sectors is expected to be issued within the next 24 to 48 hours, providing clarity to the public and businesses alike.
