HEC Issues Warning as Universities Delay Shift to Online Classes

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has instructed universities and degree awarding institutions across Pakistan to fully implement austerity measures. These directives are part of the Prime Minister’s national resource conservation initiative.

According to the HEC, several institutions have failed to adopt the required measures despite prior notifications. The commission emphasized that all universities must comply immediately and completely.

Under the new directives, universities are required to shift to 100 percent online classes to reduce energy and resource consumption. Staff members are also asked to follow a four-day workweek and adopt work-from-home arrangements wherever possible.

The HEC made it clear that these measures are mandatory. Non-compliance could undermine national efforts to conserve resources. The commission warned that institutions failing to implement the directives may face strict disciplinary actions.

Officials said that the austerity measures aim to reduce operational costs and promote sustainable practices in the higher education sector. HEC has instructed all universities to follow the rules in both letter and spirit.

To ensure compliance, universities and degree awarding institutions must report on the implementation of these measures. The HEC will monitor institutions closely and take action if any violations are found.

The commission also stressed that these steps are essential for long-term resource management in the education sector. Adopting online classes and flexible work schedules is expected to lower electricity, water, and other operational expenses significantly.

HEC officials highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader national plan to conserve resources and improve efficiency in public institutions. Universities are advised to review their current operations and adjust immediately to meet the guidelines.
