The Punjab government has decided to shut down the government-managed Nigehban Dastarkhwans and Iftar points operating across the province, citing financial strain linked to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. According to officials, the difficult economic situation has forced the provincial administration to reconsider certain expenditures and implement cost-cutting measures to manage limited resources more effectively.
Authorities stated that the decision forms part of a broader austerity strategy aimed at reducing government spending while maintaining financial stability during a period of economic uncertainty. The government-run meal distribution points, which previously provided free food to fasting individuals during the holy month of Ramadan, will therefore not operate this year under official arrangements.
However, officials clarified that while the government-managed facilities are being discontinued, assistance for vulnerable and low-income communities will not completely stop. Private philanthropists, charitable foundations, and welfare organizations are still free to establish their own Dastarkhwans or Iftar arrangements to support those in need during Ramadan.
Government representatives stressed that the decision should not be viewed as an abandonment of social welfare efforts. Instead, it is being presented as a temporary adjustment to help control provincial expenditures at a time when economic pressures are rising. By limiting certain publicly funded initiatives, the administration hopes to redirect resources more efficiently while working on alternative support systems.
In the meantime, the provincial government is developing a revised relief framework aimed at continuing assistance for deserving individuals. Officials say this new system will focus on ensuring that underprivileged families still receive help throughout the holy month, even without the government-operated meal points.
Authorities have reassured the public that the upcoming relief mechanism will be designed to provide targeted support, ensuring that the most vulnerable segments of society continue to receive necessary aid despite the closure of the Nigehban Dastarkhwans and Iftar centers.
