Middle East Tensions Rise Putin Pushes for Ceasefire

Russian President Vladimir Putin called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East during phone talks with Gulf leaders on Monday.

Putin spoke with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, emphasizing the need for a return to political and diplomatic solutions. He offered to convey UAE concerns to Iran and pledged support to stabilize the region.

In a separate call with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Putin highlighted the risks of the conflict expanding and the danger of third countries being drawn into the fighting.

The calls followed retaliatory strikes from Iran after US and Israeli attacks targeting Tehran’s forces. These strikes disrupted air travel and forced closures at major Gulf hubs, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Russian Foreign Ministry condemned attacks on civilian targets in both Iran and Arab countries, calling for restraint and a reduction of tensions.

Putin has faced growing isolation from Western nations since sending troops to Ukraine in 2022. As a result, he has strengthened partnerships with Middle Eastern countries, maintaining close ties with both Iran and the Gulf monarchies.

The UAE has acted as a mediator in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, facilitating prisoner exchanges and hosting talks between US, Russian, and Ukrainian officials on a US-drafted peace plan.

Iran remains a key ally of Moscow and has supplied Shahed drones used in the Ukraine conflict. Putin’s outreach to Gulf leaders demonstrates Russia’s effort to manage regional tensions while preserving influence in the Middle East.

Analysts say Putin’s diplomatic moves aim to prevent further escalation and signal Russia’s commitment to maintaining stability in the Gulf.
