Islamabad CDA Plans Electric Tram Service to Boost Transport

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce an electric tram service in Islamabad, following directives from the federal interior minister. The authority has been tasked with completing a feasibility study within three months, after which the project will be submitted for approval in the upcoming federal budget.

CDA has started hiring consultants to prepare technical and operational assessments for the tram network. Preliminary proposals indicate that the first route will connect Islamabad International Airport to Lake View Park, linking key urban, residential, and recreational zones. A second proposed route will run from Rawat to Lake View Park, providing suburban areas with better access to the city’s central corridor. Authorities expect the feasibility report to be finalized before June.

The proposed tram system will feature a modern, cashless transport network with digital ticketing solutions. Plans also include integration with a future glass train route toward Murree, aimed at improving tourism connectivity while enhancing regional mobility. Officials anticipate that the tram service will help reduce traffic congestion and lower carbon emissions across Islamabad.

The preliminary project plan also includes the development of charging stations and tram depots. Following completion of the feasibility study, the project will move into the tendering and construction phases, marking a significant step toward sustainable and modern urban transport in the capital city.
