Islamabad Police have taken 588 professional beggars into custody this year as part of a sustained campaign against organized begging rings operating in the federal capital. Authorities confirmed that cases have been registered under the Islamabad Prevention of Beggary Act as efforts intensify to dismantle structured networks involved in the practice.
The crackdown is being conducted on the directives of Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, according to an official statement. Police officials stated that the campaign targets not only individuals engaged in professional begging but also those facilitating and financing such operations. Legal action is being pursued against people who harass citizens at roadsides, traffic intersections, markets, and commercial hubs.
Law enforcement agencies are also identifying contractors and facilitators who provide transportation and logistical assistance to organized groups. These efforts are supported by Safe City surveillance systems and human intelligence gathering. Authorities further revealed that some individuals posing as beggars were allegedly involved in street crimes in various parts of the city.
Police have also initiated action against parents accused of handing over children to criminal groups for begging purposes. Officers across the district have been instructed to step up enforcement measures and enhance operational effectiveness. Citizens have been encouraged to discourage professional begging and report suspicious activities via the police emergency helpline “Pucar-15.”
In addition, Islamabad Police carried out eight large-scale search and combing operations. During recent checks, over 1,300 individuals were screened, hundreds of houses inspected, and multiple hotels, shops, vehicles, and motorcycles examined. Several suspicious individuals, including foreign nationals, were taken to police stations for verification as part of broader efforts to curb organized crime and safeguard public safety.
