Punjab Shuts Theatres for Ramadan Across Province

Authorities in Punjab have ordered the closure of all theatres during Ramadan, enforcing a province-wide directive aimed at maintaining respect and religious harmony throughout the holy month. Officials confirmed the decision Tuesday, saying the measure applies uniformly to every district without exception or special permissions.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Arts Council, theatre owners, producers, and license holders are legally bound to comply fully with the shutdown order. The notice emphasized that the directive is mandatory and not advisory, leaving no room for partial operations or limited performances.

Authorities warned that strict disciplinary action will be taken against anyone violating the ban. District administrations have been instructed to monitor venues closely and initiate proceedings against theatres found operating during the restricted period, ensuring enforcement remains consistent across urban centers and smaller towns alike.

Officials explained that the directive is intended to uphold the sanctity of Ramadan, a time widely observed in Pakistan with heightened devotion, restraint, and spiritual focus. Cultural activities considered inconsistent with the atmosphere of the holy month are often restricted under longstanding administrative practices.

The order also follows recent scrutiny of stage performances, particularly after authorities took action against several dancers accused of performing to prohibited songs. Regulators have increasingly stressed the need for entertainment venues to follow cultural guidelines reflecting public sensitivities during religious periods.

Theatre managements have been directed to cooperate fully with local officials to avoid penalties, inspections, or legal consequences. Authorities stated that compliance will help ensure smooth observance of Ramadan, while violations could result in fines, license suspensions, or further administrative action against responsible parties.
