PTI Protests Paralyze Highways As Concerns Rise Over Imran Khan’s Health

Supporters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf staged widespread demonstrations that blocked major highways and motorways, intensifying political tensions and disrupting travel across multiple regions. The protests were fueled by growing concern among party workers and leaders over the reported health condition of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, whose detention has remained a central political flashpoint.

Officials from the National Highways and Motorway Police confirmed that key routes were shut due to sit-ins. The M-1 motorway was blocked in both directions between Sawabi and Burhan interchanges, causing severe traffic disruption for commuters traveling toward Islamabad and other northern districts.

Authorities also reported closures along the M-14 motorway, particularly from Yarik Interchange near Dera Ismail Khan to the Isa Khel CPEC Interchange. Several connecting roads, including regional routes linking Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, experienced traffic paralysis as protest sit-ins expanded and vehicles were forced to divert to alternate roads such as GT Road.

Meanwhile, police registered cases against dozens of demonstrators, including several lawmakers, accusing them of threatening officers during protests in Islamabad’s Red Zone. According to authorities, around fifty participants allegedly carried sticks and weapons. Four arrested suspects were presented before an Anti-Terrorism Court, which granted investigators five-day physical remand for questioning.

Leaders from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa criticized the federal government’s handling of the situation. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi stated that Imran Khan has a constitutional right to medical treatment under his personal doctors’ supervision and in the presence of family members, arguing that denying such access violates legal and humanitarian principles.

Political analysts warn that the ongoing protests may deepen instability if tensions escalate further. While PTI leaders insist demonstrations remain peaceful and organized, authorities remain on high alert. The situation continues to evolve, with commuters facing major delays and the country’s political climate growing increasingly charged amid uncertainty surrounding Khan’s condition.
