US Sends More Forces to Middle East Over Iran

The US military is preparing for the possibility of a weeks-long operation against Iran. Two American officials shared this information with Reuters. They spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the planning.

The move comes as tensions rise between the US and Iran. It also coincides with renewed diplomatic efforts. Last week, officials from both countries met in Oman. The talks focused on Iran’s nuclear program and possible limits on its activities.

Despite these discussions, the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East. The Pentagon is sending another aircraft carrier to the region. Thousands of additional troops are also being deployed. Fighter jets and guided-missile destroyers are part of the buildup.

President Donald Trump addressed American troops in North Carolina. He said reaching a deal with Iran has been difficult. He added that sometimes pressure is necessary to resolve disputes.

The White House confirmed that all options remain available. A spokesperson said the president will decide based on national security interests. The Pentagon has not commented on specific operational plans.

Last year, the US deployed two aircraft carriers to the region. In June, it carried out a strike known as “Midnight Hammer.” The operation targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran later launched a limited response against a US base in Qatar.

Officials say the current planning is more detailed. A prolonged campaign could target Iranian state and security sites. This would go beyond nuclear facilities. One official said retaliation from Iran is expected if strikes occur.

Iran has warned it could attack American bases in the region. The US maintains military facilities in several countries. These include Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently met President Trump in Washington. He said any agreement with Iran must protect Israel’s security.

Iran has stated it is open to discussing limits on its nuclear program. However, it refuses to negotiate over its missile capabilities.
