When Will Ramazan Start PMD Gives Key Lunar Details

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has shared its forecast about the moon sighting for Ramazan 2026. According to the department, the holy month is expected to begin on February 19, 2026, subject to the official moon sighting decision.

The PMD said the new moon will be born on February 17, 2026, at 5:15 pm. Based on astronomical data, experts believe the crescent will be visible on the evening of February 18. This makes February 19 the likely first day of Ramazan in Pakistan.

Meteorologists explained that moon age plays a key role in visibility. On February 18, the moon’s age will be suitable in most regions. In Karachi, the moon will be around 26 hours old by the time of sunset. Experts say this age is well above the minimum required for sighting.

In Karachi, sunset is expected at 6:25 pm on February 18. The moon is forecast to set at 7:24 pm. This gives observers nearly one hour to sight the crescent. Such conditions are considered favorable for moon observation.

The PMD stated that a moon older than 19 hours increases the chances of a successful sighting. Since this requirement will be met nationwide, visibility is expected in many cities. Similar conditions may be seen in Lahore, Islamabad, and other major areas.

However, weather conditions may slightly affect visibility in some regions. The PMD has forecast partly cloudy weather across several parts of the country on February 18. Cloud cover could limit visibility in a few locations. Despite this, experts remain optimistic overall.

The final decision on the start of Ramazan will be made by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee will rely on both moon sighting reports and scientific data. The PMD only provides technical guidance for the process.
