Maria B criticizes Meri Zindagi Hai Tu over LGBT character

Renowned Pakistani fashion designer Maria B has once again ignited a nationwide discussion after strongly criticizing the portrayal of transgender characters in local television dramas. Her latest remarks target the drama Meri Zindagi Hai Tu, which she accused of subtly promoting LGBT narratives through its storyline.

In a video statement that quickly went viral, Maria B referred specifically to Episode 19 of the drama, pointing to a scene set in a girls’ college. She highlighted a particular line of dialogue — “Mueez beta, kya yeh tum ho?” — and objected to what she described as the depiction of a biologically male character shown among female students. According to her, this representation raised serious concerns.

Describing the move as calculated, Maria B claimed the creators may have believed such details would go unnoticed by viewers. However, she said the public immediately recognized the issue and responded strongly. She questioned the intent behind the casting choice, asking whether there was a lack of female actors or a deliberate decision to place a male character in a women-only setting.

Maria B argued that such portrayals could undermine women’s rights, compromise women-only spaces, and potentially impact the professional opportunities available to female actors. She warned that normalizing these narratives could have wider social implications.

She further supported her stance by citing examples from other countries, particularly the United States, where she claimed similar representations have led to serious and concerning outcomes. According to her, presenting such themes as ordinary could carry long-term risks for society.
