Extended Winter Likely Across Punjab This Year

Authorities have cautioned that this year’s winter season may last longer than usual, with cold weather potentially continuing into the early months of spring. Officials say the delayed arrival of severe cold has increased the chances of winter extending beyond its normal duration.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Director General Irfan Ali Kathia explained that intense cold conditions began later than expected this year, a factor that often results in a prolonged winter period. He noted that a similar situation was observed last year, when winter conditions stretched beyond the typical timeline, and current trends suggest the same pattern may repeat.

According to Kathia, changing climate patterns are playing a key role in altering seasonal behavior. As a result, cold weather could persist until early March and may even continue into April. He also warned that temperatures are expected to drop further after January 17 and 18, leading to an increase in the intensity of cold across Punjab.

While temperatures this winter are lower compared to last year, rainfall in the province has declined sharply. Official data shows that Punjab received only 2.5 millimetres of rain in December, compared to 11.2 millimetres during the same period last year—marking a reduction of around 75 percent. The lack of rainfall has contributed to persistent environmental issues, particularly dense fog.

Kathia said that fog remains one of the major challenges across Punjab, affecting visibility and daily routines. He added that weather conditions are unlikely to improve unless the province receives rainfall in the coming weeks.

Regarding snowfall, the PDMA chief clarified that there is no chance of snow in Lahore during the current winter season. However, he confirmed that rain and snowfall are expected in Murree and the Galiyat regions after January 17 and 18.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has dismissed claims circulating on social media about a record-breaking or extremely severe cold wave expected between January 16 and 25. The department stated that such reports are misleading and not based on official data.

The PMD urged the public and institutions to rely only on official forecasts, warnings, and advisories, emphasizing that spreading unverified information can create unnecessary fear and confusion.
