Murree and surrounding hill stations in the Galliyat region are expected to experience an extended spell of snowfall as winter conditions intensify later this month. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, snow and rain activity is likely to begin from January 17 and may continue until January 22, bringing harsh weather to the popular tourist destinations.
The National Weather Forecasting Centre said very cold and dry conditions will persist in the coming days, with frost expected during early morning and nighttime hours. Temperatures in Murree have already dropped below freezing, while daytime temperatures remain low, increasing the likelihood of snow accumulation once the weather system becomes active.
Forecast data shows that cloud cover will gradually increase from January 16, followed by rising chances of rain and snowfall from January 17 onward. The probability of snow is expected to peak between January 20 and January 21, when chances could rise to as high as 75 percent, accompanied by sub-zero minimum temperatures.
Meteorological officials warned that the multi-day snowfall could significantly disrupt daily life in Murree, Galliyat, and surrounding areas. Intermittent road closures, traffic congestion, and power supply issues are possible, particularly during heavy snowfall periods and at night when visibility is reduced and temperatures fall sharply.
Tourists planning trips to the region during this period have been urged to exercise caution. Authorities have advised travelers to ensure vehicles are winter-ready, carry snow chains where required, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall hours. Visitors are also encouraged to follow local administration instructions and stay updated on weather advisories.
Local administrations and emergency services have been placed on alert to manage potential disruptions and assist residents and tourists. Officials said machinery and response teams will remain on standby to clear roads and address emergencies. Residents have also been advised to stock essential supplies and take precautions against extreme cold as winter conditions continue to grip northern parts of the country.
