Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, is reportedly holding advanced discussions with Pakistan over a potential defence deal involving JF-17 Thunder fighter jets and armed drone systems.
The talks took place in Islamabad during a high-level meeting between Indonesia’s Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Pakistan Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu.
Officials familiar with the engagement said the proposed package includes JF-17 multi-role combat aircraft, jointly developed by Pakistan and China, alongside surveillance and precision-strike drones.
Sources indicated negotiations may cover more than 40 JF-17 aircraft, with Indonesia also showing interest in Pakistan’s Shahpar drone platform, though timelines remain undisclosed.
Both governments confirmed the meeting, with Indonesia’s Defence Ministry stating discussions focused on long-term cooperation, while Pakistan highlighted broader regional and global security dialogue.
Pakistan is simultaneously pursuing defence export talks with Bangladesh, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia, offering aircraft, drones, training programmes, and air defence systems.
