Following Motorways Are Closed For Vehicles

The National Highways and Motorway Police have closed several motorway sections after dense fog reduced visibility to dangerous levels. The decision has disrupted major intercity travel routes across Punjab and Sindh during peak winter conditions.

According to NHMP, traffic has been completely suspended on key motorway stretches to prevent accidents. Affected sections include M-1 from Peshawar to Swabi and M-2 connecting Islamabad with Lahore.

Other closed routes include M-3 from Faizpur to Jaranwala, M-4 between Gojra and Faisalabad, and M-11 linking Lahore to Sambrial. In Sindh, M-5 from Rohri to Rahim Yar Khan has also been shut.

Officials said fog is a recurring winter hazard that can reduce visibility below 50 metres. During such conditions, the risk of road accidents increases sharply, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

The motorway closures were announced on January 12, 2026, as fog-related disruptions have affected more than 500 kilometres of highways since early January. Freight movement and passenger travel have faced repeated delays.

NHMP advised motorists to postpone non-essential travel during night and early morning hours. Drivers have been urged to plan journeys during daylight, as partial visibility improvement was reported on some sections later.
