Ukraine Hosts Security Talks in Kyiv With International Allies

Ukraine is hosting high-level security talks in Kyiv with national security advisers from about 15 countries, along with representatives of the European Union and NATO, in a major diplomatic push amid the ongoing war with Russia.

The discussions on January 3, 2026 come as Kyiv and its partners work toward advancing a U.S.-brokered peace plan and developing security guarantees for Ukraine’s future. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the peace plan is now “about 90 per cent” ready, but key territorial issues and the details of how to protect Ukraine after the conflict remain unresolved.

Officials from the so-called “coalition of the willing” — a group of supportive nations — are participating in the talks, with a broader summit expected to follow in France later this week. The coalition aims to coordinate security and defense commitments and strengthen Ukraine’s position before any final agreement is reached.

Ukrainian leaders emphasise that the military component of security guarantees is crucial and have described the talks as an opportunity to align international support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. A delegation from the United States is participating via video link, while European security advisers are physically present in Kyiv.

The arrival of national security advisers from countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Spain, and several Baltic states, along with representatives of NATO and the European Council, was confirmed by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, underscoring the wide international engagement.

These diplomatic efforts coincide with continued heavy fighting on the ground. Russia still occupies significant parts of Ukrainian territory and has maintained pressure on multiple fronts with ongoing missile and drone attacks. Ukrainian officials argue that robust security guarantees from international partners are essential to deter future aggression, as well as to provide a credible framework for peace.

The security talks reflect both Kyiv’s determination to secure lasting international backing and the complex negotiations underway to balance Ukraine’s defense needs with diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war. Allies are expected to build on these discussions in the coming days at subsequent meetings focused on long-term security arrangements and peace negotiation strategy.
