Hamas, also known as the Islamic Resistance Movement, is a militant organization that holds authority over the Gaza Strip, a densely populated and elongated territory spanning 25 miles. Hamas originated as a derivative of the Muslim Brotherhood during the initial Palestinian intifada or uprising in 1987, which was a response to the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank.
Hamas is committed to armed resistance against Israel and seeks the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 Six-Day War borders.

Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s chief political leader, resides in Qatar, one of the countries that provides financial support to the group, along with Iran.
