The United States has added the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to a select group of countries eligible for special export privileges, making it easier for the Gulf nation to purchase advanced American technology, defense equipment, and other controlled products.
With this decision, the UAE becomes the first country in the Gulf region and only the second Muslim-majority nation, after Türkiye, to be included in the US A:5 export category. This designation is reserved for trusted partners that receive simplified access to certain American exports.
Under the new arrangement, the UAE government and approved businesses will be able to obtain a wide range of eligible US products through the Strategic Trade Authorization (STA) program without applying for individual export licenses, as long as they meet the required security and compliance conditions.
The products covered under the program include selected military equipment, commercial satellites, spacecraft, and other advanced technologies regulated by the US Department of Commerce. These technologies can be used in sectors such as oil and gas, desalination, critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and civilian nuclear energy.
According to the US Department of Commerce, the decision is intended to strengthen the UAE’s commercial, technological, infrastructure, and defense capabilities while also supporting American strategic interests in the Middle East. Officials said the move reflects the strong partnership between the two countries and the UAE’s commitment to protecting sensitive US technology.
The announcement, however, drew criticism from Iran. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi accused Washington of rewarding the UAE for what he claimed was its support for actions against Iran. He alleged that the easing of US export restrictions was linked to the UAE’s position during recent regional tensions.
Gharibabadi warned that the decision could have legal and political consequences for the UAE. However, the UAE has not publicly responded to the accusations.
