The Punjab transport department has directed a reduction in public transport fares after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a decrease in diesel prices. The decision was finalized during a meeting between officials and transporters at Transport House.
Following discussions, transporters agreed to cut fares by 5 percent and formally confirmed the reduction. The Secretary of the Regional Transport Authority stated that updated fare lists would be issued and displayed the same day, with the revised rates coming into immediate effect.
Rana Mohsin warned that strict action would be taken against operators who fail to display the new fare lists or charge above the notified rates. This move comes after the federal government reduced diesel prices by Rs. 32.12 per liter for the week ending April 24, lowering the ex-depot price of high-speed diesel to Rs. 353.42 from Rs. 385.54.
The price cut follows a drop in global oil prices, driven by easing tensions after a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Since diesel plays a key role in freight transport, its price directly affects fares and inflation, prompting authorities to pass on the relief to the public.
