T20 World Cup West Indies dominate USA with a 9-wicket victory in Super 8 clash

In a dominant performance, the West Indies defeated the United States by nine wickets in the Super 8 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The West Indies successfully chased down their target of 129 runs in just 10.5 overs, significantly boosting their net run rate and putting them in a strong position to progress to the semi-finals. They now only need to win their upcoming match against South Africa to secure their semi-final spot, even if England wins against the USA.

Shai Hope was the star of the match, playing an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 39 balls, hitting four fours and eight sixes. Nicholas Pooran supported him with an unbeaten 27 runs off 12 balls, which included three sixes and a four.

Earlier in the match, the West Indies won the toss and opted to bowl first. They put on a clinical bowling display, restricting the USA to 128 runs in 19.5 overs. Roston Chase had career-best figures of 3-19 in his four overs, while Andre Russell took 3-31 in 3.5 overs.

Chase, who was named Player of the Match, expressed his excitement over achieving career-best figures in front of his family and friends. He emphasized the importance of spinners in their strategy, particularly if early wickets are not taken. Chase stated, “It was my destiny and my goal to win the World Cup, so anyone we play we have to beat from here to win it.”

For the USA, Andries Gous was the top scorer with 29 runs off 16 balls. Nitish Kumar contributed 20 runs, and Ali Khan remained unbeaten with 14 runs off six balls.

Both teams had suffered defeats in their respective opening Super 8 matches, making this match crucial for their World Cup campaigns. The comprehensive victory has now put the West Indies in a strong position moving forward in the tournament.
