The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning due to rising water levels in the Sutlej River. The alert was announced on Tuesday, highlighting a possible low-level flood at Ganda Singhwala in the coming days.
According to NDMA, the water flow in the Sutlej River increased sharply within one hour. The discharge rose from 28,657 cusecs to 33,653 cusecs. This sudden rise is being monitored closely, as it may lead to flooding in nearby low-lying areas.
The situation is expected to worsen with heavy rainfall predicted in upstream regions. From August 5 to August 7, rain is likely in the upper catchment areas of both the Sutlej and Beas rivers. This could cause further increases in water levels.
NDMA also shared updates on water reservoirs across the border in India. Bhakra Dam is currently 55% full, while Pong Dam has reached 56% of its capacity. Any extra release from these dams may intensify the flow of the Sutlej River downstream. This would increase the risk of floods in parts of Punjab.
To manage the situation, NDMA has instructed local administrations to stay alert. Emergency systems are being prepared. Authorities have been told to ensure proper drainage and get ready for possible evacuations.
Residents near riverbanks have been urged to remain cautious. The NDMA has asked fishermen and farmers to take safety steps as river conditions could change quickly.
The NDMA continues to monitor the Sutlej River closely. People are advised to follow updates from local officials to stay safe during this developing situation.
This alert is part of the NDMA’s efforts to reduce risks and protect lives during seasonal floods.
