At the age of 26, Hasaranga made his Test debut in December 2020 against South Africa. Despite this, he has only appeared in four Test matches since then. His most recent Test appearance was against Bangladesh at home, over two years ago in April 2021.
On Tuesday, August 15th, Hasaranga conveyed his decision to retire to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), which was subsequently accepted by the board. Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, stated, “We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward.”

Having established himself as a specialist in white-ball cricket since his One Day International (ODI) debut in 2017, Hasaranga has played a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s limited-overs endeavors. He has taken part in 48 ODIs and 58 T20Is for his country, amassing a total of 158 wickets and scoring 1365 runs.
Notably, Hasaranga played a pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. Their victory in the Qualifier tournament held in Zimbabwe was greatly aided by his performances, as he emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the competition with 22 wickets to his name.
