Sri Lanka Introduces Visa-Free Program To Increase Tourism

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]As part of a major initiative to enhance its tourism sector, the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka has officially initiated a complimentary visa program for citizens of seven countries with immediate effect.

This initiative, sanctioned as a pilot program by Cabinet Ministers on October 24, 2023 (Approval No: 2311885/6021023), is slated to operate until March 31, 2024.

Eligibility and Passport Categories: Under this newly introduced system, nationals from China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Japan can benefit from a visa-free arrangement. This privilege is extended to individuals holding Diplomatic, Official, Public Affairs, Service, and Ordinary passports from the mentioned countries.

Visa Validity and Entry Terms: The complimentary visa has a validity period of 30 days and permits dual entries into Sri Lanka. This allows travelers the flexibility of entering and exiting the country twice within the stipulated 30-day visa duration.

Sri Lanka ETA Application Procedure: Applicants are required to submit their Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) applications online. The ETA application process typically takes approximately three working days to finalize.

Necessary Documents: Essential documents include a valid passport, travel insurance, proof of sufficient funds, and flight reservations. Although the payment gateway screen is currently part of the ETA application submission, the Department of Immigration and Emigration (DIE) assures its imminent removal.

Tracking Visa Status: Applicants can monitor the status of their ETA applications through online channels.

General Regulations: This complimentary visa program is specifically designed for nationals of the seven designated countries. Citizens of other nations must adhere to the general rules and regulations applicable to Sri Lanka ETA.

Extension of Complimentary ETA: The free ETA cannot be prolonged beyond the initial 30-day validity period. If an extension is required, it can be requested, subject to the payment of the appropriate fee.

Processing Time and Recommendations: The standard processing time for ETA applications is approximately three working days. However, it is advisable to apply well in advance to mitigate potential delays.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
