Monkey Triggers Nationwide Blackout in Sri Lanka
A monkey intrusion at an electrical grid sub-station led to a nationwide power outage in Sri Lanka on Sunday, government officials confirmed.
The blackout started around 11:30 am (0600 GMT) and lasted for more than three hours, with electricity still not fully restored at the time.

According to Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody, the disruption occurred when a monkey made contact with a grid transformer, disturbing the system’s balance.
The incident took place in a suburban area of south Colombo. While electricity was partially restored in some regions, officials were still assessing the full impact and duration of the outage.
“Our engineers are actively working to restore power as quickly as possible,” Jayakody stated.
Sri Lanka previously experienced widespread blackouts in 2022 due to an economic crisis that caused fuel and electricity shortages during the summer months.
