At least six people were killed after a gunman opened fire at a market in Bangkok on Monday, according to a statement from Thai police.

Among the dead was the shooter, who took his own life, Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, Charin Gopatta, told Reuters. The five other victims were market security guards.

Police are working to confirm the gunman’s identity and determine the motive behind the attack. The incident occurred in Bangkok’s Bang Sue district at a market primarily dealing in agricultural goods. Authorities confirmed that no foreign tourists were among the victims or injured.

Tourism, a major contributor to Thailand’s economy, could be affected by such violent events, especially as the country struggles with slow economic growth.

Police-released video footage shows a suspect wearing a white hat and carrying a backpack walking through a parking lot at the scene.

Gun violence is not rare in Thailand. In October 2023, a 14-year-old used a modified firearm to kill two people and injure five at a luxury mall in central Bangkok. In 2022, a former police officer carried out a mass killing at a nursery, claiming 36 lives, including 22 children.
